Root Canals

If you have a toothache, this may indicate an infected tooth. Root canal therapy at Arrowhead Family Dentistry treats tooth infection to restore your tooth and protect it from further damage. Without proper care, your toothache could get worse, and your tooth may eventually require extraction and replacement with a partial denture, dental bridge, or dental implant.  If you are in Fletcher Heights, West Wing, or Arrowhead and think you may have an infected tooth, contact us for an appointment today.

Fighting Infection

What is A Root Canal?

Root canal therapy is a method of restoring and preserving your tooth after it has become infected. If the hard outer layers of your tooth are destroyed by tooth decay or an oral injury, the pulp in the inside of your tooth can become infected.

This pulp is full of nerves and blood vessels and keeps your tooth alive. If it becomes infected and you do not get treatment, your tooth will eventually die and require extraction. A root canal is used to prevent this.  By opening up a hole in the tooth and cleaning away the diseased and infected material inside your tooth, root canals allow your tooth to be saved, providing relief from the pain of infection.

The Root Canal Process

The root canal process takes only one short appointment at our office. First, one of our doctor will numb your mouth and isolate the infected tooth with a dental dam. Then, the decayed and damaged enamel will be removed with a dental drill by creating a very small opening in the tooth’s surface.

Through this opening, one of our doctors will remove the decayed and infected pulp from inside your tooth. Once this material has been removed, the tooth will be flushed and cleaned with disinfectant. Then, it will be filled with a rubber-like material to support the interior of the tooth. Finally, your tooth will be restored with a filling or temporary crown. Depending on the location of your tooth, you may need to come back to our office to get a dental crown.
