Why Would I Need a Dental Crown?

Common Dental Issues

A dental crown is a false tooth made of ceramic porcelain that is designed to cap and cover your entire remaining tooth structure and protect it from further damage. These prostheses may be necessary if you have a severe cavity that is too large to treat with a composite filling. If a cavity is too large, attempting to fill it may compromise the tooth structure and simply cause more damage. After root canal therapy, a dental crown is necessary to protect and cover your tooth. A dental crown is also necessary to complete the implant process.

Typically, a dental crown is recommended when a tooth has become seriously damaged due to tooth decay or an oral injury, but they can also be used for cosmetic purposes. For example, if you have a tooth that is healthy but small or misshapen, a dental crown can be used to create a seamless, beautiful smile.

What to Expect From

The Placement Process

Whether you’ve had a root canal or are covering a tooth for a cosmetic reason, your placement process will be broken up into two appointments to ensure a custom, precise fit. At your first appointment, or during your root canal therapy, the decayed or broken tooth will be trimmed and any damaged enamel will be removed. The tooth will be shaped to create a stable platform where the crown will be placed.

Next, images and impressions of your teeth will be taken, a temporary crown will be placed on your tooth. Your impressions and images will be sent to the lab where your custom crown will be made. Once your crown has been built and sent back to our office, you’ll come in for your second and final appointment. One of our doctors will place the permanent prosthetic on your tooth and he will check it to ensure proper shape and fit. Once you feel comfortable with the placement and fit, he will bond it in place permanently and you can enjoy your beautifully restored smile.

Caring for a Dental Crown

The Healing Process and Aftercare

One of the major benefits of a dental crown is that it requires no special care. Simply treat it like a normal tooth! Continue to brush and floss as usual, and come in to Arrowhead Family Dentistry for regular cleanings and exams. This will ensure that your gums and surrounding teeth are staying healthy.

Dental crowns are extremely durable and can last 10-15 years or longer with proper care. However, they can be damaged. If a crown falls out, it is considered a dental emergency and you will need to come in as soon as possible to prevent any further damage to your existing tooth structure. We offer same-day appointments to accommodate dental emergencies. If you have a missing, seriously damaged, or misshapen tooth and are interested in getting a dental crown, call us today to schedule your consultation!
